Natural History Museum & Research Centre, Mizoram University is now recognized and granted a Designated Repository Status by National Biodiversity Authority

Aizawl, Mizoram – July 07, 2026

The Natural History Museum & Research Centre (NHM&RC), Mizoram University, has been granted Designated Repository status by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) under Section 39 of the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Act, 2023. With this recognition, Mizoram’s Natural History Museum becomes India’s 21st Designated Repository. This is the first of its kind for the North East and the first for a University in India. 

This recognition by the National Biodiversity Authoritystrengthens NHM&RC’s role as a key centre for biodiversity documentation, conservation, research, and public education in the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. The collective contributions of the departments under the School of Life Sciences, Mizoram University, and Pachhunga University College have been instrumental in achieving this prestigious national recognition.
